Getting Started

How do I create an account?

Click the Sign Up button in the top right corner, or visit the registration page. You'll need to provide:

  • A username (3-20 characters, letters, numbers, and underscores only)
  • A valid email address
  • A secure password (at least 8 characters)

After registering, check your email for a verification link. Click it to activate your account.

Can I browse without an account?

Yes! You can read all threads, comments, and discussions without logging in. However, you'll need an account to post, comment, or vote.

How do I reset my password?

Visit the forgot password page and enter your email address. We'll send you a link to create a new password. The link expires after 1 hour for security.

What are user tiers?

User tiers recognize your contributions to the community. As you participate, you earn points that help you progress through tiers:

  • Newcomer - Just joined (0-99 points)
  • Regular - Established member (100-499 points)
  • Trusted - Community trust earned (500-1,999 points)
  • Senior - Community pillar (2,000+ points)
  • Distinguished - Admin-recognized contributor

Learn more about privileges and benefits on our User Tiers page.

How do I earn points?

Points are awarded for positive contributions:

  • +0.5 points for creating a post or comment
  • +1 point when your content receives an upvote
  • +2 points per hour of active time on the site
  • -1 point when your content receives a downvote

Points can also be deducted for policy violations, so remember to follow our Content Policy.

Account Settings

How do I change my email or password?

Go to Settings to update your email address or change your password. You'll need to confirm changes with your current password for security.

How do I enable two-factor authentication (2FA)?

In your Settings, find the Security section and click "Enable 2FA." You'll need an authenticator app like Google Authenticator or Authy to scan the QR code. This adds an extra layer of security to your account.

Can I change my username?

Usernames cannot be changed after account creation. This helps maintain accountability and allows other users to recognize you. If you need a new username, you'll need to create a new account.

How do I delete my account?

To delete your account, visit your Settings page and look for the account deletion option. This action is permanent and cannot be undone. Your posts and comments will remain but will be attributed to "[deleted]".

Posting & Comments

How do I create a new thread?

Click the Submit button in the navigation bar, or visit the submit page. You can create:

  • Link posts - Share an article or webpage
  • Text posts - Start a discussion with your own text

Choose the appropriate section and subsection for your post. Good categorization helps others find your content.

How do I format my posts and comments?

ThreadChain supports basic Markdown formatting:

  • **bold** for bold text
  • *italic* for italic text
  • [link](url) for links
  • > quote for block quotes
  • `code` for inline code

Can I edit or delete my posts?

Yes! Click the menu (three dots) on your post or comment to see edit and delete options. Edited posts will show an "edited" indicator. Deleted posts are removed from view but replies to them remain visible.

What is the voting system?

Use the up and down arrows to vote on content:

  • Upvote content that contributes to discussion
  • Downvote content that is off-topic, low-quality, or violates guidelines

Voting helps surface the best content. The score determines how threads are ranked on the homepage and in sections.

Why was my post removed?

Posts may be removed if they violate our Content Policy. Common reasons include spam, harassment, personal attacks, or posting to the wrong section. If your post was removed, you should have received a notification explaining why.

Finding Content

How do I search for threads?

Use the search bar in the navigation to find threads by keyword. You can also filter results by section, author, or date range. Visit the search page for advanced options.

How are threads organized?

Content is organized into sections and subsections:

  • Sections - Broad categories like Technology, Science, Entertainment
  • Subsections - Specific topics within sections like AI, Space, Gaming

Browse sections from the homepage sidebar or navigate directly to topics that interest you.

What do Popular, New, and Rising mean?

Different sorting options help you discover content:

  • Popular - Highest-scoring threads from recent time periods
  • New - Most recently posted threads
  • Rising - Threads gaining votes quickly

Browser Extension

What is the browser extension?

The ThreadChain extension lets you discuss any webpage on the internet - even sites without comment sections. A small widget appears on every page showing existing discussions and letting you join the conversation. Learn more on the extension page.

How do I install the extension?

The extension is currently in beta and available for manual installation:

  2. Unzip the downloaded file

  4. Enable "Developer mode" in the top right
  5. Click "Load unpacked" and select the extension folder

Why don't I see the widget on some pages?

The extension may not appear on certain pages:

  • ThreadChain.io itself (to avoid confusion)
  • Browser settings and internal pages
  • Chrome Web Store
  • Sites with strict Content Security Policies

How do I quote text from a page?

Hold the backtick key (`) while on any webpage to enter selection mode. Hover over elements to highlight them, then click to capture that text as a quote for your discussion.

Can I hide the widget?
